A nursery practitioner needs to be warm and caring. They need to have good communication skills and be responsible. They also need a consistent and fair approach.
You do not always need qualifications to start training as a nursery practitioner. Course providers and employers may prefer you to have a good standard of general education such as GCSEs, including English and maths. Before you can begin working with children you will need Criminal Records Bureau clearance.
Your job could be at local authority or privately-owned nurseries, Sure Start Children's Centres and primary schools. In some jobs you could be known as a nursery nurse. You could also specialise in working with children with physical disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health problems.
