Be Independent

Be Independent

“If you want to build your confidence and learn new things before going on to study full-time, into an apprenticeship or employment, this could be the right choice for you.”

Be Independent

If you found learning in school difficult or perhaps find the large college campus intimidating we understand, there are plenty of opportunities with South Devon College to help you achieve your own goals.

Into Employment and Training is an approach to learning that can help you work towards improving your personal and social development and achieve qualifications in English, maths and IT along with opportunities to develop vocational skills in areas such as painting and decorating, beauty, administration, life skills, art, cooking, drama, sports and fitness, healthy living skills and much more.

Your personal style of learning and interests are considered so that creative learning solutions can be developed to suit you. We use a wide range of different methods, both indoor and outdoor, that will help to create stimulating learning environments.

The focus is on learners gaining a range of skills, providing a sound foundation for further learning and employment. Courses are run on a regular basis in Newton Abbot, Torquay and Paignton.

The LODGE (Learning Opportunity for Development and Guided Education) is our Autistic Spectrum Condition provision. It provides bespoke support, tailored to meet the individual learners' needs and is run by a team of specialist staff. This support can be in the form of general pastoral care, break and lunchtime support, study support, home-college communication or simply a ‘safe haven' where our ASC learners can relax.

Learning Opportunities courses: these discrete courses for students with a learning difficulty &/or disability offer supported, smaller classes run at all entry levels. The curriculum is wide ranging supporting learners' independent living and study skills. In addition to tutorial support and the development of employability skills, maths, English & computing skills, these courses offer a range of specialist and vocational areas, such as woodwork, automotive, painting & decorating, child care, animal care, catering, gardening, sport & fitness, and enrichment opportunities, for example a range of educational visits and trips.
